Common Type of Plywood and Their Uses

The best substitute for natural wood is plywood. It gives high-quality, high-strength sheet material that can be used for furniture, doors, windows, etc. It has a good quality that can resist breaking, shrinkage, cracking, warping, and twisting.

For outdoor use, the best suitable is exterior glued plywood. But moisture control has to be considered as it can affect the strength of wood. The moisture content has to be relatively low for optimal performance. The dimensional or strength properties of plywood are not affected in subzero conditions, making some special applications possible.

Stressed skin application is also one of the major uses for engineering material of plywood. Since World War 2, this application has been used for marine and aviation processes. Commercial plywood manufacturers can be found who provide the best quality plywood for optimal use.

Some common uses of plywood can be to create curved surfaces so they can bend easily with the grain, such as skateboard ramps. Plywood provides a smooth surface that can be bent to create a smooth transition that can shape like ocean waves.

Several Common Types Of Plywood:

Some common types of plywoods are as below-

Sanded Plywood

The plywood of which face and back that is top in bottom piles are sanded during the manufacturing process is called sanded plywood.

Uses- Ideal use of this kind of plywood is for shelves, paneling, and cabinets.

Hardwood Plywood

These flies are glued at right angles, making the plywood very strong, stable, and durable. Hardwood ply is usually made up of Maple oak and Birch tree. It is usually heavier than other kinds of plywood. As the name suggests, hardwood ply is strong and can have a maximum load-bearing capacity.

Uses- Ideal for

  • Floors subjected to heavy wear in various buildings and factories
  • Scaffolding materials
  • Container floors
  • Panels in concrete formwork systems
  • Floors, walls, and roofs in transport vehicles

Birch plywood uses- :

  • Insulation boxes for liquefied natural gas carriers
  • in special applications as a structural material, e.g., Wind turbine blades

accurate thickness with a smooth surface combined with the durability of the material makes birch plywood an ideal and favorable material for many special uses, e.g.:

  • Sports equipment
  • Playground equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • High-end loudspeakers
  • Supporting structure for parquet
  • Furniture
  • Signs and fences for demanding outdoor advertising
  • Die-cutting boards

Structural Plywood

This is made for permanent structures. It is also known as plywood sheathing. This is generally unfinished and inexpensive but strong. Hence, it is not ideal for places where there is a chance of it to show. It has to be covered by other material in the outer layer.

Uses-

  • Beams
  • Flooring
  • Bracing panels
  • framing
